APL 1445 Da milagrosa Imagem de nossa Senhora da Atalaya, da Aldeã Galega de Riba Tejo

An image of the Lady appears on a mastic tree (aroeira), near a fountain, and it is transferred to a stand, near the tree. As the devotion grows, a church is built (in 1623). When she is transferred to the church, she returned to the stand. "So many times that her worshippers made another image that they put inside the church, and named this one the young Lady". The "old Lady" remains on the stand.

Her gown was often seen wet, and sometimes stained with pitch, "a sign that she cares to go and help her boatmen".
